West End Shows

London's West End is the home to the capital's main theatre district. This area is technically bordered by Oxford Street, Regent Street, The Strand and Kingsway although it also includes some venues outside of the actual West End. The main streets associated with the West End include Drury Lane and Shaftesbury Avenue.

The theatres in London's West End will offer a variety of shows at any given time. So, for example, you could see a musical or play (from comedy to drama) in one of the major theatres or a show in a smaller venue. The theatres here are particularly world famous for premiering productions by impresarios such as Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh from a musicals perspective and the world's major playwrights will generally all have been represented in the West End at some time or other.

Some of the best known venues in the West End include:

Many of the major theatres in the West End date back to Victorian or Edwardian times as this has long been used as a theatrical area. Many of the theatres still in use will, in fact, have listed status and the theatres themselves are worth a visit from an architectural and historical perspective as well as to see a show. The longest running show in the West End is the Mousetrap by Agatha Christie which has been in production here since the 1950s.
